Buggy or quad, and how muddy
Both run the same red tracks out to a water cave and Macao beach. A buggy seats two and you take turns driving; a quad is one machine each. Either way you come back the colour of the road.
Saona, or something smaller
Saona is the big one: catamaran out, speedboat back, a long stop at the sandbar. If a hundred and fifty people on one deck is not your morning, the small-group snorkel boats leave from the same marinas.
Water caves and the blue hole

The Humpback Season
From the middle of January to the end of March several thousand humpbacks come down from the North Atlantic to breed in Samana Bay, and the boats leave the town wharf every morning. It is a regulated season: a fixed number of licensed boats, a fixed distance from the animals, and a closing date nobody stretches. Arrive in April and the bay is empty water.

The Water Caves
The whole east coast sits on porous limestone and the rain has been carving it out for a very long time. Some of the caves are floodlit, with a boardwalk and a guide; others are a hole in the scrub with a rope ladder and cold, startlingly blue water at the bottom. Most buggy and quad routes stop at one, which is why half the island arrives at them under a coat of dust.

Chocolate From the Tree
The Dominican Republic grows more organic cacao than any other country, and the farms in the hills behind the coast will hand you a pod, split it, and let you taste the white pulp long before anything is roasted. Sargassum, swell and an afternoon of rain: where to go instead.
The east coast gets sargassum in spring and early summer, the Atlantic side gets wind, and from June the afternoon storms arrive more or less on schedule. All three have the same answer, which is to go inland. Caves, cacao farms, colonial streets and waterfalls all read better under cloud than under glare.
